Name: Nyoni
Age: 19
Secret Word: PM'd!
Gender: Female
Sexuality: heterosexual
Race: Na'vi
Tribe: Aylukana
Mount: Ikran: Usiku (female)
Usiku is dark for an ikran: such a deep purple she is almost black. Her wings and back are threaded with lines of light lavender edged in gray; in the right light the gray is an iridescent silvery color. Her jaw crest is also pale lavender, as opposed to the usual reddish-orange.
Usiku is also rather small. While she is still quite large enough to support Nyoni in extended flight, she appears very petite when compared to her larger cousins. Her wingspan is maybe five meters outstretched; but since Nyoni shares her diminutive size this is not a problem.
What Usiku lacks in size, however, she more than makes up for in personality. She is very fierce in battle and to other ikran. She puts up with the Na'vi with a tolerance that always seems just a bit put-upon, and she will take off a hand if she deems it necessary.
Usiku's love for Nyoni is just as fierce as her dislike of her brethren. If left without flying for more than several days, she will pout and refuse to eat; longer than a week and she will not hesitate to go in search of her lost mistress.
Physical Description: Nyoni is small for her age, being only about 8 feet tall. Most who do not know her mistake her for a child, which she cheerfully resents. Her skin is dark and primarily one shade, with only hints of stripes on her arms and back. She has a round face with large, pale eyes. The part of her hair that she cannot keep in her braid is short and oddly curly, and almost impossible to tame. She usually lets it float around her face instead of pinning it, much to the consternation of her mother.
As for her taste in apparel, Nyoni is worse than a magpie. Her necklace is one of bones painted in bright colors and strung with shimmering beads. She often weaves feathers or flowers into her shorter hair or her necklace. Her wrists and tail are adorned with leather ornaments, and her flight-crown ((if there's an actual word for this, please to let me know?)) is made of woven leaves and bright red stones.
Despite all this Nyoni is an acceptable hunter; her small size and natural grace make up for her often garish appearance. She is very dainty in the way she moves, preferring to travel above the floor along tree branches on all fours. Her proudest accomplishment is the time when she went three weeks without once standing upright or touching the ground. She hunts from Usiku's back or from the branches; her tail and hind legs are sufficient to support her while she reaches down to thank and collect her prey.
Of course, there are those times when Nyoni must descend; here her agility and swift grace utterly fail her. It is as if Nyoni is made ill by the forest floor: she trips over her tail and cannot shoot straight without being coiled around a branch. It's not even the nearness of the ground that is the problem - her skills remain on branches just inches in elevation. Nyoni's magic lies in the trees, not the ferns.
Personality: Nyoni is a typical young woman, most of the time. Unfortunately she is a bit of a show-off, and Usiku, her jewelry, and her affinity for trees matter more to her than more important affairs.
She's also a bit of a scatterbrain, being easily distracted by anything new, shiny, or pretty. She loves to wander off into the woods in search of somewhere she hasn't been before. This has nearly cost her her tail on more than one occasion. It might be said that Nyoni has a penchant for getting into rather nasty situations.
When she can keep her irritating streak in check, however, Nyoni is perfectly good company. She laughs very easily and has a decent sense of humor. She is easy to talk to and can keep a secret if the importance of doing so is pressed upon her. Nyoni loves to gossip, and will tell anyone everything she thinks of until she either runs out of breath or is smacked over the head, whichever comes first. (Usually it is the latter.)
Possibly because of her lack of people skills, Nyoni's best friend is Usiku, and even when not flying she will hide in the highest branches of hometree, link with the ikran, and just sit there in companionable silence. It is perhaps one of the only times that Nyoni can keep her mouth shut for more than fifteen minutes at a time.
When not letting everyone know exactly what she thinks or wandering around looking for trouble, Nyoni spends time with her father. He is fluent in English and is attempting to teach her, but she herself is not very good at it yet. She enjoys learning, but she might not be the brightest leaf in the forest - though telling her that would be particularly unwise.
Talents: Nyoni's most-used skill is climbing, and she does it often and with great delight, but others find it rather pointless. Her father endeavored to teach her how to read and speak English, with some success. But Nyoni's favorite thing-she's-actually-good-at is flying. She loves Usiku very much, and when told to "do something useful", Nyoni will most likely run off to practice with her ikran. She is also mediocre-to-decent at weaving and carving, and makes little figures out of wood. Only she can tell what they are, but they make her happy, and occupy her when there's nothing else to do.
History:
Nyoni is the youngest of three children born to her parents. Her birth and infanthood were uneventful. As a child, Nyoni was outpaced by her eldest sibling, an eight-years-older sister, in almost every way. Her older brother was the one to pull her to her feet as it were, teaching her most of what she needed to learn. Until her thirteenth year he was her closest friend, and a far better mentor to her than her parents; but as she grew up she developed her cheerful likability and they drifted a bit further apart. They are still very close, however.
When she was 17, Nyoni made her first kill and was allowed to tame an ikran. Her sister vanished that same year, and she set out with the still-learning Usiku to try and find her. After several months, a series of misadventures, and the valuable lesson that Nantang really don't like ikran, even if they are only asleep in a tree several hundred yards away, Nyoni found that her sister had eloped with a man from another tribe and was actually perfectly fine. Severely disappointed, Nyoni returned to the forest with Usiku and the promise not to tell Father what had happened.
Nothing else exciting happened to Nyoni after her return home. Two things she did discover were the delights of pranking the humans who wandered through the woods in false bodies, and the fact that they don't like ikran that much either if they don't realize they're being ridden.
Following the avatars soon became boring, and she again sought entertainment in her brother. He taught her how to carve wood figurines, although she was never as adept at it as he was. It was then, in the start of her 19th year, that she began to wander deeper and deeper into the forest. She usually went alone, though her brother sometimes insisted on accompanying her, and Usiku would occasionally follow with or without invitation. That proved life-saving on more than one occasion... especially since Nyoni has a skill for attracting hostile attention.
Nyoni still continues her arboreal expeditions nowadays, although they are somewhat less frequent. Between her friends in the tribe, practicing with Usiku, and lessons with her father and brother, she is beginning to fit in a bit more.
One day Nyoni and Usiku will tell their secret to her brother, and they will go out and bring their sister back home... maybe.

"Nyoni!"
Someone was calling her - she thought it might be her mother. Silently she shrunk deeper into the foliage of her hiding place, watching. She could watch for hours. No one would find her here, not painted as she was. Nyoni had decided that dark green was her new favorite color, and had wasted no time in wheedling some paint from a few of the nicer old ladies. Now she was painted in emerald dapples, and no one was going to find her.
The call came again, more urgently: "Nyoni!" There was a rustle, and a muttered curse. "Where is that girl?"
It was definitely Mother, probably trying to force her to the loom again.
Nyoni didn't want to weave. She wanted to go hunting, but there was no need of that. She wouldn't have minded wasting time with her brother, but he was off with some of his friends. English lessons might have been fun, but Father was busy doing something important, and he'd already shooed Nyoni away twice that day.
"Is she hiding again?" said a new voice. Nyoni winced. It was her brother. Unlike mother, he was always very good at finding her.
Nyoni retreated further up the tree.
"Yes." Mother sounded as if she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders, not just the inconvenience of a daughter who wouldn't weave. "I cannot find her. Help me."
Nyoni peered through the leaves and saw her mother and brother standing a short distance away. As she watched, her brother left. He looked distinctly amused.
Mother continued to pace. Nyoni allowed herself a tiny inward sigh. She was going to have to wait here for a while.
Shortly, Nyoni's brother returned, looking satisfied.
"What did you do?" Mother asked him. He just smiled.
"You will see."
At that moment there was a soft whooshing noise, and a rattle of branches, and something hard and cold hit Nyoni in the small of the back. A loud growl-chirp noise revealed her attacker to be Usiku.
"I see you, tsmuke." He was definitely amused. Nyoni hissed at him good-naturedly.
"I see you, and you are a traitor. Do you realize I am going to have to go and do boring things now?"
"Come down from there," he said, smiling in that infuriating way. Nyoni hissed again and slithered along the branch to where Usiku was perched precariously.
"You will stop bothering me if I come out of the tree?"
He sighed.
"Yes, Nyoni."
A quick leap brought her to the branch above Usiku's unsaddled back; a second set her down on top of it.
"All right, tsmukan, then I will." Another swift movement brought tsahaylu, and Usiku shivered and chirped happily.
Let's go, Nyoni thought, and Usiku leaped gratefully from the tree, swooping down and nearly knocking Nyoni's brother over. "You should have seen that coming, brother dear!" Nyoni cried over her shoulder. She laughed at him as they rose, and together she and Usiku climbed into the sky.
