Name: Adriane Wright - called Ari only by her closest friends
Age: 30 (5 years in cryo)
Secret Word: PM'd for Nyoni
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Race: Human
Occupation: Scientist - xenozoologist (study of alien animals)
Human Physical Description:
Adriane is not exactly pretty, but nor is she ugly, either. A better word for her might be "charming" or "cute" - though that might be best said in private. She is on the upward side of short, being just a shade over five-three. She is rather curvy, but very flat (a quality which she denounces loudly). She is round-faced, with a ski-jump nose and prolific freckles. Her eyes are a dark greenish-brown. She has long black hair that curls and frizzes wildly if not pinned back. Usually it is piled atop her head and held in place with a stylus or pen.
Adriane doesn't really care what other people think of her looks; she doesn't wear make-up (which would be pointless in the tropical heat anyways) or try to hide her freckles. Her hands are usually ink- or sap-stained, and she often has leaves tangled in her hair. Originally Adriane was probably pale, but this is hidden by the usual smuts of dirt and occasional bruise - Adriane is out in the forest even when she's not linked, and tree roots can be deadly as she well knows. She also has a slight aversion to accessories, never wearing hats, jewelry or barrettes - though she has worn a simple jade bracelet without taking it off for about a year and a half.
Adriane dresses with a casual disregard for professional standards. When in the biolab she usually sports jeans and a T-shirt under her white coat, which would not be abnormal save for the fact that she usually wears the same thing outside the lab as well. In her opinion if superiors can't stand to see someone dressed in working clothes, they aren't very good superiors. The only time Adriane will concede to standards is if she is summoned specifically; then, at least, she has the sense to make herself presentable.
Avatar Physical Description: Adriane's avatar is surprisingly different from her - perhaps only because the Na'vi's natural stature and hers are so at odds. Of course going from pale and 5' 3" to ten feet tall and bright blue changes a lot about a woman's looks, but usually there is more of a semblance between humans and their avatars than there is between Adriane's and hers. The avatar is tall and thin like all the others. It has the usual long, straight "hair" beside the face and braided queue; Adriane has chosen not to cut the loose-hanging part, so it hangs down to just below her shoulders. Its face, too, contrasts Adriane's - giving the tiny scientist a flat nose changes her whole facial structure.
The avatar's skin is the usual bright cyan marked with bright points of light. Instead of being striped, however, the avatar is dappled across the arms and face with a pattern of darker blue circles. Its eyes are large and more green than others' - the only concession its body makes to being related to Adriane.
The avatar's other Adriane-ing feature is the way she dresses it: cutoff jeans (she had to specially order them to fit the avatar's elongated frame, and they weren't cheap, either) and a black tank top or T-shirt.
Usually this is the only way to tell from afar that the avatar one is working with is, in fact, Adriane Wright.
Personality: In a word, Adriane might be described as "eccentric". She is almost unfailingly cheerful, despite any circumstances to the contrary. She's a very nice person and makes efforts to welcome new explorers from Earth, and she is quite helpful in the lab. She is smart - that much is clear from the beginning - but intelligence often comes with stranger, shall we say, side-effects. Ask about her antique book collection (it includes such as the now-worth-thousands children's novel Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, passed down through her family for a hundred and fifty years), or her ability to sound exactly like a zebra, or the fact that she can draw what might be the best hypothesis of what a Thanator's insides look.
One of Adriane's more fatal flaws is her tendency to be an optimist whatever the situation. Lost in the woods? Oh, but look how pretty that flower is! A pack of viperwolves is going to eat us? Yes, but now we can get a closer look at how they can laugh like hyenas! Oh, a hyena, by the way, is an animal that died out in twenty-first--
Needless to say it is not one of Adriane's stronger points.
When not working in the biolab, where she spends much of her time, or out in the woods linked, where she spends much of her remaining time, Adriane makes it a habit to learn a new completely useless fact each night. Her knowledge of the old-Earth mythologies is vast, especially that of Ancient Greece: she is very proud of the fact that her name is that of the wife of Dyonisos, god of wine and revelries. Ask her to tell you the story one time, or rather - don't. She speaks Na'vi relatively fluently, as well as a bit of fundamental Latin that she learned from the namings in her biology texts back at University.
All in all, Adriane is a good friend to have if you can get over her more peculiar side.
Talents:
Adriane, surprisingly enough, is an excellent artist. Armed with either a data pad and stylus or an old-fashioned pencil and paper, she can render almost anything required. Usually circumstances require anatomical or catalog drawings, but once upon a time she fancied herself an illustrator. Some of those are still around, somewhere.
Adriane also has a fondness for chess and is good at puzzle or logic games. She's quick to figure things out, and if something wants to hide its secrets from her, it can only do so temporarily. She is therefore good at fixing things - supposedly. Usually her attempts at repairs fail miserably, and the technicians and pilots will not let her near their machinery.
History:
Adriane was an only child, and shortly after her birth had an only parent, too. Her mother Laura died in some sort of industrial explosion, though details were never released, not even to her family. After Laura died, Adriane's father Lawrence, mad with grief, became a deeply religious man, saying that the only way to save this wretched earth was through repentance and prayer. Adriane bought little of this, herself under the opinion that the last struggling Earth religions were probably false and whatever god there was, if there was one, was not that pleased with humans and unlikely to forgive even those who repented.
When she was 17, Adriane graduated from high school and moved on to University, where she majored in zoology with minors in biology and veterinary studies. Her father was furious that she hadn't decided to become a nun, but Adriane had never had any intention of doing so. Lawrence became so irate that he attempted to force her withdrawal, and when that didn't happen, he tried to get the headmaster to expel her on the grounds of disobedience. The headmaster, a rather sensible man, replied that Adriane was already one of his top students and he had no grounds whatsoever to remove her. Lawrence, now quite deranged, was last seen running off into the wastelands outside Los Angeles, screaming something about "frivolous penny-chasers."
The affair was mostly covered up, and Adriane pretends she's been an orphan since birth.
Adriane graduated from University just before her twenty-first birthday, and was stationed in a Research and Development department on Earth for three years. Some of her work was noticed by the minds behind the return to Pandora, and she was offered a position as a biologist.
After a year of training and further studies, Adriane was assigned as a field explorer and sent into space. Her job upon arrival of Pandora was mainly cataloging, going out into the wilderness in search of as of yet undiscovered flora and fauna. Once she had proved to be somewhat underused with this work, she was reassigned as a zoologist. Her duties then included deeper study of the animals, including anatomy scans and studies and an occasional tagging to plot migrations. The first of these missions earned her a couple of nasty scars, but Adriane was able to learn from her mistakes and quickly became adept at her knowledge-seeking forays.
