Paradise Lost was founded on the 27th of December in 2009 by Silmaneero and myself. We've known each other for several years, have run multiple sites together, and knew that when we both saw AVATAR it would be a film worthy of pursuing fanfiction opportunities. That being said, we entertained the idea of doing some solo games together but quickly realized that making an AU RPG and inviting others to write in our world would be far more rewarding. Thus, PL was born.
There have been several AVATAR RPGs made since the film debuted in December that range from beginner to advanced, but Paradise Lost prides itself by stepping away from the norm that seems to have developed with the explosion of the movie's fandom. What makes us so different from the others?
That said, we do not consider ourselves in any way pretentious or exclusive, but simply different. This is not meant to frighten anyone away from PL, but to help you better understand our board and hopefully, if you are a prospective member, help you figure out if this RPG would be a good fit for you.
Our goal here is to find writers with some experience and aid you in bettering yourself, not always just giving you an outlet to channel your fandom. Yes, we have all been in that position (Myself included! When I opened this site I wanted nothing more than to throw in my Na'vi and go wild), and we encourage you to share your excitement with others, as the reason we are all here is primarily for our love of the film itself.
We do hope that our group of writers continues to grow and that we can entice more people into pursuing an amazing and original plot that we have sketched out for this website. We always welcome suggestions and chat sessions via PM, Chatbox, or Instant Messenger. We want our members to feel comfortable being here, so do not hesitate to throw a random introduction thread or chat thread up on the board. After all, I would like to consider all of the members here on PL a part of a family.

- We prefer quality over quantity.
Our goal here at PL is to create a website based in Pandora's world for writers who wish to pursue an original plot and participate in an intermediate to advanced atmosphere. While we may have far fewer members than the other sites floating around, it is because we have a thorough application process in order to select those who we feel would best represent the quality we look for in our writers.
- We prefer originality to canon
Several people have come to me complaining about our lack of canonical characters in our setting. As a writer myself, I believe that simply reinventing someone else's creation is not tapping into the true potential you may have as an artist. The point of this board is to create your own character and breathe life into them, whether they are an innocent Na'vi pursuing a life of peace on Pandora, or a twisted human being who is bent on saving his own home.
- Our name is simply not just a name
Out of any other board I have made, I will have to say that selecting the final title for Paradise Lost was one of the easier decisions I have made. The name of this board was not selected on a whim, nor was it dubbed PL simply because I thought it to be an attractive website title. The reason for its selection is three fold.
I chose it primarily because of John Milton's famous poem, entitled Paradise Lost. In brief, the piece essentially recounts the iconic Christian story of the Fall of Man, a notion which is heavily underscored in Cameron's film and shall further be explored as our board progresses. Secondly, one could say on a practical level that, yes, Pandora is a lost paradise. And thirdly, on a more stylistic level, our board is a paradise lost in and of itself, as we strive to be different from the other RPGs currently running.
That said, we do not consider ourselves in any way pretentious or exclusive, but simply different. This is not meant to frighten anyone away from PL, but to help you better understand our board and hopefully, if you are a prospective member, help you figure out if this RPG would be a good fit for you.
