For as grand as the scope was for this film, you could definitely tell it was created with sequels and a massive franchise in mind. Personally, I didn't find the plot itself too incredibly riveting, but I think Cameron knew he could be afforded a pretty generic storyline with his take on the whole 3D film experience and his insane world-building ability. That's what hooked me...the graphics were incredible. I'd like to go see it again to see if my opinion changes, though.

I've seen it twice, and I agree with Jill. Cameron's been working on this thing since '94, so it'll probably be a massive franchise. I like the idea of branching out into different planets. I'm looking forward to the sequels. Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington already signed on. =D

Hmm. As much as I <3 Avatar, I remember stepping out of the theater with my mom and sister (took 'em as an early christmas present xD ain't I shweet?) and going; "I do hope they don't make a sequel." Why? Well, they didn't exactly leave much room for a sequel that could make much sense. Or... at least one that wasn't hokey as all hell. You know?
But, if James Cameron (Aliens. <3 Just <3. He made a sequel out of alien. I luff him for it.) can manage to make a reasonable second movie out of this one... I'm all for it. 110% xD I almost find myself hoping that the next one is told from the Marine's side, maybe a squad that defects or something. But that's probably just teufel hund blood flowing through my veins.

From what I've seen thus far, a sequel would pick up almost immediately where the first movie left off. Not sure what he plans to do with it, really...

He actually has two sequels in mind, according to Wikipedia.
To tell you the truth ... I'll go see anything, no matter how stupid the plot is, just to see the graphics and the crazy-cool animals & plants. So wicked awesome!
They actually have a prequel in game-form for iPhone. I just downloaded ... have to wait for my phone to charge before playing it though >_<

No wonder it's so good, he's been working on it for years. Plenty of time to spot plotholes. I'm a great plot picker and I totally didn't see Toruk Makto coming until he managed to get back into his Avatar. And, like Asia said, he's got two more movies up his sleeve at least.

To be truthful, I don't know how I feel about this. I love Avatar a lot (obviously) and as much as I would love to see it represented--Sequels tend to have the opposite effect. If he does do it, though, I would like to see it well-planned out like the first one. Not rushing into it, or cranking them out as fast as possible to get the largest gross product. To see anything mass-marketed makes me sad. Avatar would just be a giant loss, at least--I think so. It would lose it's magic if not handled carefully. I just hope that the creators see that as well. I would be so crushed to see it just become a giant idol only to fall from being milked too much, as the industry tends to do.
But there are some sequels that are worth seeing and waiting for. I really do hope Avatar is one of them; and if not--well, we old timers still have the first. That's at least how I conceive the subject. And hey, I'm all open to be in awe again--as I was the first time seeing Avatar.
Perhaps they will expand the back-story on Eywa or on the Na'vi in general. That would be rather interesting to see. Plot-wise, though, I'm unsure as to how they could expand it. Mm, but it doesn't surprise me with all the money he's made from the first Avatar that there wouldn't be a second one in the makes. He's technically made over twice what the movie originally cost him. What else would he do with the profit? -shrug- [/blockquote]

I've heard reports that the major character actors have already signed on for two potential sequels. So, it will be interesting, but I'm curious how they plan on branching out onto the other worlds like I read in some of the other posts. The Na'vi are clearly not leaving Pandora any time soon.

Well he's got to finish Battle Angel first, yes? I believe he was working on that...could be wrong...either way, if he makes a sequel/prequel I'm game for it. I would think that branching off into the other moons, or following the RDA's recouping from their first mistake as a storyline would be in his best interest and make a sequel more intriguing...at least for myself. Though I would have to say a prequel, or perhaps going further in depth into the Na'vi's past/culture as a whole...the tribal wars or perhaps the story of one of the great Toruk Makto...perhaps the one mentioned in the movie?...would be a good idea for a movie. Then again, I'm big into history and culture of various civilizations...lore and such interests me, so anything like that would gain my attention.
Well, that's just my personal opinion anyway...
1) other moons, other races and other challenges 2) Follow the RDA and the problems their facing after their expulsion from Pandora...perhaps get a glimpse of "future earth" and how things are there. 3) set the new story in the past of the Na'vi and go a bit more in depth into their culture and some of their lore...tell us one of their legends or something.
