`Human:
Saleen's has a dark and almost impish look about her. Her dark hair is cut into a short pixie style to accommodate military regulation while also throwing her high cheekbones and sharp features into flattering relief. She has dark eyes and tanned skin from Latino heritage and/or dust and dirt from military operations. She is most often in her khaki uniform and heavy black boots that hides her slim and almost tom-boyish figure. Her only feminine qualities are her slightly full lips that hide a mostly straight set of white teeth (with just a few crooked ones to look cute) and wide eyes with thick lashes. Otherwise she is a very slim and toned young woman that, if pushed, could masquerade as a man without many problems besides her height which is a little on the shorter side at 5'5".
Saleen's personal additions to her body consist of a few tattoos, piercings and accessories. With regards to tattoos Saleen has three: a small violet crescent moon hugs the underside of her left breast and a brown gecko about the length of her little finger is on her shoulder, often visible around the strap of the white vest-top she wears beneath her uniform. On the underside of her wrist is the quotation "like the eternal rocks beneath", from her favorite book Wuthering Heights that no-one seems to get or understand and she is forever explaining it. Saleen has her ears pierced once in each lobe and a single stud in the upper curve of her right ear but otherwise has no outside piercings to follow military personnel dress requirements. The only accessories she wears with her uniform are two brightly-colored friendship braids around her right ankle which are usually inside her heavy-duty boots and a leather cord she ties in a simple knot around her neck. She is not overly girlie in her appearance but somehow manages to give off the appearance of a female lioness rather than the lion in her military companions. The way she moves indicates that she is obviously a woman despite having few seductress qualities.
`Avatar:
Like normal Na'vi people Saleen's Avatar appearance has blue skin with darker streaks of the same hue. Due to her Latino skin this blue is one of the slightly darker tones among the woodland tribe and from her human height her Avatar's stature is also a little on the short side. With darker ocher eyes from her own heritage Saleen, though slightly darker in most ways looks just like any other Na'vi besides having four fingers instead of three like every other Avatar.
When in avatar form Saleen tends to wear a black vest top and light khaki waistcoat and shorts with heavy black boots. As a customization to her appearance she has braided her hair and often pulls it back, away from her face, with only a few plaits hanging around her face. Slim, like any other Na'vi, Saleen also has good muscle tone as she had practiced in her Avatar form quite a lot despite very rarely going into the forest and meeting natives. Instead she stays in the compound and practices her movements until she's confident and so has not built up the sturdy soles on her feet or the knowledge of how to understand or use the forest.personality
`the good girl.
Saleen has always been one to follow orders. She entered the military because she had always been more of a tomboy than a prissy girl and enjoyed the feeling of pushing herself to her emotional, mental and physical limit, hence her volunteering for the Pandora exploration project. She also believes in the Honor, discipline and self-control that is needed when working for the army and when following other people's orders. On top of this a lot of Saleen's paycheck is sent back home to Earth to support her family and it is this aspect of the job Saleen was most keen on when applying. As such she does not have any inclination to loose her employment and works hard to follow orders to the letter... at least when her commanding officer is paying attention.
`the bad girl.
Though she works hard to obey any order given to her Saleen has a cheeky and fun personality that leads her to bend rules she considers to be ridiculously strict, when people aren't paying attention, that is. If it is a small bending of rules when no-one will find out- such as sock-surfing down corridors or boosting up a plane's engine with a bit of tinkering she doesn't object.
`the pilot.
Saleen originally signed up for the Pandora mission to be a pilot of their smaller crafts as she loves to explore and feel weightless in the air. Unfortunately when they arrived the Na'vi made it plain that they did not trust or want "metal birds" in their home and Saleen has rarely flown one since arriving. Instead she continues her military training as a runner or general helper and works on engines of vehicles and machines to keep them working. Though she's only really talented in the area of flying Saleen can do a good enough job in most areas, if not as well as some others.
`the na'vi.
As an avatar Saleen loves it. It's an opportunity to explore, test a new body with far more potential than her own and test herself again in new ways. Though she's still learning, it's an area of her life that she relishes with excitement.
`Talents:
Saleen is a skilled pilot and pretty good at handy-man tasks. She has a dedicated and systematic approach to things but also has a fun side to her. Not included within her talents are the academia side of things or obedience to someone she doesn't not think she owes allegiance to. She follows orders when given them by her commanding officer but she doesn't like being bossed around otherwise.history
Saleen was born in 2161 to a mechanic father and a full-time mother on planet Earth. With four older brothers and herself to support Saleen's parents were not financially enviable. With little to their name but the spare money in their pocket before they spent it on the weekly food trip Saleen grew up in her brothers' cast aways. Not only did she inherit their clothing and toys, Saleen also took on their attitudes and general view of the world, becoming a serious tom-boy and cutting her hair as short as she could get away with. She preferred to be considered as one of the boys, one of her brothers, than be the outcast as the only female. Her four brothers doted on her, teased her, and taught her how to wrestle, play sports and fight dirty. Upon entering school Saleen was always mistaken for a boy and treated as such by both genders. The girls shunned her and the boys fought with her, often coming off the worse. In fact, Saleen was sent home from school for fighting more than her brothers. Her mother chastised her while her father thought it amusing.
In time each of her brothers left the house, Jaime, who was the eldest, some twelve years older the Saleen was the only one of the four to succeed greatly in anything. Accepted onto a premier football team in America he left his family in the small village of Portugal and, with all the money he had ever saved in his life, bought a plane ticket for the USA. Only earning enough to support himself Jaime never managed to support his family back home the way he had hoped but his parents didn't mind. Both were proud of him for the achievement he had made. Darrian was the second, two years younger than his brother and was unspoken of in the family after being arrested for an armed robbery. To Eliza and Jaime Sr, their second son was dead to them. Saleen would occasionally visit her brother without her parents knowledge though and has never lost contact with him over the years. Darrian had always been too full of determination and anger to accept his family's state of near poverty and had attempted to do something about it. He had also been mad at their eldest sibling who, he had been convinced, would come back from America a rich sportsman and save them from their lives. When Jaime hadn't, Darrian had felt betrayed and attempted to step into his brothers shoes and provide for his younger siblings... illegally.
It was the third son, Arlo who had had the brains. Had he the courage to set up such a robbery it would only have been this son to pull it off undiscovered. Instead he had become a scientist. Eliza Michelle had always been a keen gardener of the small plant pots she had dotted around their small home. The lack of an actual garden had never stopped her passion for plants and this had been passed down to her third son. Arlo loved botany and spent his school years researching and writing papers. Without the money to fund higher education, however, he had been working for the last ten years forever attempting to save up and attend a prestigious university. It was he, however, who had told stories of Pandora to his little sister ever since she was young, and that had sparked off a keen interest Saleen didn't know she had had until given the opportunity to visit the moon.
Lucas was Saleen's favorite brother. The youngest of the boys, just three years older than his sister, Lucas encouraged Saleen's boyish tendencies more than anyone else in the family. On top of this, however, he was also aware of her becoming more feminine when she hit her teens and was the large older brother who scared off potential boyfriends. When Saleen was fourteen Lucas entered the army. Saleen spent her free time now, not with her brother, but with her father learning about vehicles and engines. When the letter came through two years later that Luca had been killed in a bomb explosion Saleen was distraught. Having never been very girlie in the first place and having never been good in school or had a passion of her own Saleen enrolled in the military. Unsure why she wanted to join the organization that had led to her brother's death she could only suppose that it had something to do with wanting to live out the life he could no longer have.
After four years in the military Saleen had been a pilot for three of them. She was good at what she did and had a good memory of protocol and procedures created from her father routinely teaching her how to take apart an engine and put it back together again. Though young she was respected in her field and commended by her commanding officer.
It was this commanding officer who was asked to go on the Green Mother's expedition to the moon of Pandora. He was a skilled pilot Saleen had learned a lot from and what was better was that he didn't treat her differently because of her gender. Unfortunately Serg. Jackson was 38 at the time and had a heart condition that meant he was unlikely to survive the chryo. Instead of refusing the offer entirely he asked if they would allow him to choose a replacement for himself. Saleen was that replacement.
When first considered, her age was called into question at only 19 but as she had 6 years of chryo ahead of her and a strong body that could withstand more than her years testified she was allowed to go.
On Pandora Saleen was in her element and loving the new life and environment awaiting her. However, after it was made clear by the natives in small and halting communication, that they did not trust the "metal birds" the humans had brought with them Saleen's piloting skills were no longer needed. At first the military discussed sending her and the few other pilots they had, home, but it was decided that the flight home would be too expensive to fund. Instead the new pilots were assigned to new teams and Saleen was appointed with the Avatar drivers at her request. Though she doesn't like learning new stuff like languages, Saleen does love challenges, and learning to live in a new way, in a new body, seems like a good one...

It had a strange and eerie tone to it that Saleen tried to ignore. Not only was she... well, not exactly what you'd call a scientist she wasn't even that academic. She had only asked to be part of the Avatar program for the idea of it. Walking around in a body twice your size that could fly around on dragon things? Who would turn that down? It sounded a blast! Of course... she knew it wasn't going to be that easy. She would have to train and learn. That was important. Her Avatar had taken a little longer to be prepared than the others so that had given her a little more time. Stupid authorities... she thought. Why hadn't they checked before leaving whether or not the Na'vi were keen on planes. It wasn't really surprising that they didn't like anything big and metal flying around when you cracked open a history book. Something Saleen hadn't actually done. The Internet was a marvelous thing...
Sitting in her small bunk Saleen wondered if that was what she should do. Open a book or two? She did have a lot to learn as it was. Then again, the twenty-five year old had always learned best when flying (sometimes literally) by the seat of her pants. Learning as you go was so much easier and faster than trying to memorize textbook after textbook.
Slapping her hands on her knees Saleen stood up. She moved toward the main door of the room she shared with another girl - someone who worked in the kitchens or something - and looked at the smeary and warped reflection of herself in the metal. Her face looked ridiculously wide even though she knew it was heart-shaped and her neck impossibly thin. Looking down, Saleen noticed, with wry amusement that not even the caricaturing metal could offer her a better bust size under her white t-shirt. Sighing, Saleen wrenched open the heavy door with little effort. Though her wrists were thinner than a man's they were still strong, as were her toned arms and legs. Shutting the door behind her, Saleen headed for the lab that had been playing on her mind.
She had never actually been in the room since she had arrived on Pandora a week ago. For the first few days she had assumed that she wouldn't need to go in there at all but since she had been assigned to the Avatar program there had been no decent sized creature for her to link with. They had had to grow her one linked to her own DNA. Thank God those tanks grew them fast.
Saleen's heavy boots made low thuds on the grilled walkway as she took a right turn and then a left. Her directional comprehension wasn't bad and she was thankful that she had yet to be embarrassed about asking for directions. She was quite eager to avoid any activity that made her look more useless than her young age already did. Despite being technically 25 chryo hadn't done much for maturing her appearance. She still looked about 19. Mind you, her mother had always looked young so maybe it was just genetics.
Sticking her hands in the pockets of her big khaki pants Saleen reached the door she had been told led to the Lab but had never opened and reached for the handle. Pulling it open she found it held lots of people. Some sat or stood by monitors while others milled around the main floor. Several coffin-shaped pod lined one wall and there was a mystic glow from the computers hovering everywhere. Making a slight face with her lips Saleen blew out her breath a little heavily and shut the door behind her. As few people looked up at her entrance but they quickly went back to their work. Rubbing a hand awkwardly over the back of her short crop of hair Saleen moved toward the biggest light in the room- glowing blue tanks. There were several of them and it took a moment of reading the small notes in front of them which was assigned to her. Moving around the side of the tank the girl pressed her nose up against the glass, her breath making white fog on the pane.
Her eyes widened as she got a good look at the creature inside.
"Man, that is one frickin' big smurf." She said to herself as she tilted her head to get a better look at it.
