The Lab.
It had a strange and eerie tone to it that Saleen tried to ignore. Not only was she... well, not exactly what you'd call a scientist she wasn't even that academic. She had only asked to be part of the Avatar program for the idea of it. Walking around in a body twice your size that could fly around on dragon things? Who would turn that down? It sounded a blast! Of course... she knew it wasn't going to be that easy. She would have to train and learn. That was important. Her Avatar had taken a little longer to be prepared than the others so that had given her a little more time. Stupid authorities... she thought. Why hadn't they checked before leaving whether or not the Na'vi were keen on planes. It wasn't really surprising that they didn't like anything big and metal flying around when you cracked open a history book. Something Saleen hadn't actually done. The Internet was a marvelous thing...
Sitting in her small bunk Saleen wondered if that was what she should do. Open a book or two? She did have a lot to learn as it was. Then again, the twenty-five year old had always learned best when flying (sometimes literally) by the seat of her pants. Learning as you go was so much easier and faster than trying to memorize textbook after textbook.
Slapping her hands on her knees Saleen stood up. She moved toward the main door of the room she shared with another girl - someone who worked in the kitchens or something - and looked at the smeary and warped reflection of herself in the metal. Her face looked ridiculously wide even though she knew it was heart-shaped and her neck impossibly thin. Looking down, Saleen noticed, with wry amusement that not even the caricaturing metal could offer her a better bust size under her white t-shirt. Sighing, Saleen wrenched open the heavy door with little effort. Though her wrists were thinner than a man's they were still strong, as were her toned arms and legs. Shutting the door behind her, Saleen headed for the lab that had been playing on her mind.
She had never actually been in the room since she had arrived on Pandora a week ago. For the first few days she had assumed that she wouldn't need to go in there at all but since she had been assigned to the Avatar program there had been no decent sized creature for her to link with. They had had to grow her one linked to her own DNA. Thank God those tanks grew them fast.
Saleen's heavy boots made low thuds on the grilled walkway as she took a right turn and then a left. Her directional comprehension wasn't bad and she was thankful that she had yet to be embarrassed about asking for directions. She was quite eager to avoid any activity that made her look more useless than her young age already did. Despite being technically 25 chryo hadn't done much for maturing her appearance. She still looked about 19. Mind you, her mother had always looked young so maybe it was just genetics.
Sticking her hands in the pockets of her big khaki pants Saleen reached the door she had been told led to the Lab but had never opened and reached for the handle. Pulling it open she found it held lots of people. Some sat or stood by monitors while others milled around the main floor. Several coffin-shaped pod lined one wall and there was a mystic glow from the computers hovering everywhere. Making a slight face with her lips Saleen blew out her breath a little heavily and shut the door behind her. As few people looked up at her entrance but they quickly went back to their work. Rubbing a hand awkwardly over the back of her short crop of hair Saleen moved toward the biggest light in the room- glowing blue tanks. There were several of them and it took a moment of reading the small notes in front of them which was assigned to her. Moving around the side of the tank the girl pressed her nose up against the glass, her breath making white fog on the pane.
Her eyes widened as she got a good look at the creature inside.
"Man, that is one frickin' big smurf." She said to herself as she tilted her head to get a better look at it.
