Name: Shaylee Carter, but to her family and close friends she's known as Shay
Age: 28 (Including 6 years in cryo)
Secret Word: Sent
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Race: Human
Occupation: Xenobiologist, but is also skilled in Xenolinguistics and helps in communication
Human Physical Description: Shaylee isn't exactly what you'd call "average", especially in the category of height. With long, lean, legs that seem to stretch on for miles, and being just a hair under 6'1, Shaylee has always stood heads above the crowd. Her fair complexion is also an oddity to many; skin that burns with the slightest touch of the suns rays, a near milky white, or ghostly in tint. As a child her parents rarely let her go out on the sun due to fear of skin cancer. She has rosy red cheeks, that look as if she is always blushing, complemented by splotches of freckles around her cheeks and nose. There's only one word to describe her eyes: copper, as if there were fresh new pennies replacing her iris. Being a pure-blood Irish girl; freckles, pale skin, bright brown eyes and all, she also has rich, brown hair in fine, delicate strands which starts out pin-straight at the scalp and work their way down to wavy/curly at the ends.
With pale white skin, scars and marks stand out in broad daylight, drawing themselves to the eye immediately. None of her scars are major battle wounds or anything serious of that nature. An arch shaped scar runs up her right leg, from a squabble with her older sister when they were children. The one scar that bothers Shaylee the most, in other words makes her the most self conscious, is a scar running from the top of her cheek diagonally down toward her chin, stopping about half way down, from a clumsy fall in highschool.
What can one find Shaylee usually wearing? That's a tough question, considering that besides her lab coat, her outfits are as versatile as her haircut. Lounging about or simply enjoying a quiet night alone usually yields a pair of boot cut jeans and a casual t-shirt. On occasion she'll spice things up, still having childlike qualities in her, with floral dresses or skirts, but this is quiet rare with Shaylee. When on the job, plain white lab attire she finds drab and outdated. Flowers, whether clip-on or natural, are a common thing with her, as well as headbands, ribbons, and wristbands and bracelets running up and down the course of her arm.
Avatar Physical Description: Shaylee's avatar resembles her on a number of points; long, lean figure, piercing, light brown eyes, and fair skin. Her avatar's hair is kept in a shoulder length braid, with a straight line of bangs running across her forehead. The markings on her face are a rich blue in color, much darker than her skin tone, giving the appearance of "tiger stripes".
Clothing for Shaylee's avatar is left plain and simple, without any of the decorations she usually adorns in her hair. Cargo pants, a brightly colored tank-top, and a pair of running shoes are her usual attire, accompanied by a backpack containing all of her necessary xenobiology test-tubes, journals, and other nonsense most people wouldn't bother to carry around. She does carry a knife with her, just in case of a sudden ambush or other attack, but she thinks highly of the Na'vi and highly doubts she'll ever need to use it.
Personality:
The Introvert: Shaylee keeps to herself, often choosing to work alone than in a group, she's never quite known what to do in social situations. Some might call her "socially awkward", but some prefer the term "shy". Small talk is often hard for her to start, or continue for that matter. If given the choice, she'd rather ponder things by herself, or watch the clouds roll by. Give her time, Shaylee will warm up to you quickly if you let her attempt to open herself to you.
The Optimistic: Its not hard to tell from one look at Shaylee, with that bright, Irish smile spreading across her face, that she thinks of the world as one big bowl of cherries. With the hardships she's been through, she realized during her teenage years that no matter what, light will always find its way through the darkness. No wonder her favorite movie is "Wizard of Oz". Sure its an old-timey classic, but its core message resonates deeply with her; no matter what life throws at you, there's always a rainbow somewhere to brighten the sky.
The Religious: Many people don't know this about Shaylee, but she puts all her faith and trust in God. Growing up in a small, Irish community, most of the members Roman Catholic, she grew up learning to trust God and if you have faith, He will provide for all your needs. Growing up, with her living situations were never ideal, and at times growing up, Shaylee questioned God and His plans for her, why he would make her suffer. But through the trials and tribulations of blossoming into maturity, Shaylee began to realize that God had provided her needs, and that no matter what, with Him on her side, she could achieve anything.
The Inquistive: Even as a child, Shaylee questioned the natural order of things; within her community, within her home, even with the natural order of the world around her. In school, her questions often bugged teachers, they constantly told her to get her head out of the clouds and focus on her studies. While studying the flora and fauna of Pandora, her mind wanders constantly, and she's always questioning the origin of species, how the Na'vi use certain plants, and other business of that sort.
The Easy Going: When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Shaylee's past has taught her to roll with the punches of life, and that things usually turn out for the better. But, if something is going wrong, and she knows it, she'll stand up for herself to make a 180 degree flip for the situation. Other than that, many find her to be a very relaxed, agreeable person.
Talents:
Xenolingustics: The Na'vi language is a language Shaylee learned in hopes of preserving its secrets for future generations of Earth, and who knows, other worlds and planets. While skilled in English, French, Celtic, and some phrases in Chinese, Na'vi is by far her favorite language to learn. With her talent, she hopes to aid in communcation between humans and the Na'vi, aiding in trade between the two, and gaining knowledge of their sacred traditions and customs
Artist: When out in the heart of Pandora's wilderness, it is imperative not to disrupt the natural beauty the dwells within. Photographs and video devices can cause flashes and other disturbances, while a pencil and paper harm nothing. Shaylee was always sketching and doodling as a child, but finally put it to good use on Pandora, sketching the surroundings without disturbing its balanced harmony.
Out of the Box Thinking: Growing up in the slums, you learn to think quick on your feet with whatever life throws at you. It takes a sharp eye and a keen mind to take something ordinary, or a grave situation, and turn it on its side in a 180 flip. That's exactly how Shaylee takes life, looking for a better or out of the box way to do things, not caring whether it's the easy way or not.
Understanding: You may be wondering, how is understanding in anyway, shape, or form, a talent? Well, its a skill most people in the year 2186 have little need for compassion for others, by this point in time many just do what they can to survive against the outlook society faces. Growing up in the slums, Shaylee knows what its like to feel your lowest lows, your heart beating rapidly in fear, and the feeling of salty tears stinging your scruffed up face. That's why she feel so much for the Na'vi, and for the plight they once suffered long before her time: That feeling of losing the only thing that matters to you, losing your family, your friends.
History:
Shaylee Carter was born in 2158, deep in the slums of Dublin, Ireland. Her mother was a seamstress, her father a drunkard who tried to hold his family together, what one might call a typical Irish stereotype, but all too common in the backalleys and underworld of Dublin. With two daughters and a son, Shaylee's mother often took odd jobs to support her family, while her father did the best he could to stay sober and find work where he could. The twins, Driscoll and Lyla, four years older than their sister, would often watch their youngest sibling, doing their best to keep out of trouble and stay alive.
In the underworld, anything is possible, if you've got cash or something to trade. All three of the Carter children were put to work in 2164, though illegal at the time, none of the blokes looking for their work cared much at all. During the day, all three children went to their separate jobs; Driscoll to a workers farm in the country to gather ingredients for the local breweries, Lyla to a local tavern to help in the cleaning and scrubbing; and Shaylee, even at the age of six, would normally take the laundry of the wealthy land owners and scrub what she could for a few extra Euros. The rule of the underground was simple: Pass as for older, or act like the owner's child, or get arrested. The children swore by this rule, and were determined to make do with what they had. While Shaylee would normally end up home by sunfall, Driscoll and Lyla would often not come back for days at a time, sometimes coming back with cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
In 2169, after five years of work, Shaylee's mother passed away, leaving behind three struggling children and a despondent father. At the sudden death of his wife, Mr. Carter suddenly realized what conditions of life his children had lived under; today was the day he'd end it all. Shaylee was taken out of her secret work and placed into school, along with Driscoll and Lyla. You may be asking, how can three children get away with not going to school without anyone noticing? With all the slums, overcrowding, and density of Dublin, its hard to keep track of anyone. The government left the slums to fend for themselves, or to some, left them invisible.
School did not come naturally, to any of the children, especially starting so late in the system. Shaylee often struggled with math and science, while the twins were constantly felt the need to return to their work, that no matter how much schooling they received, the slums had become them. Driscoll was the first to run away, after a year of schooling, at age 16, to try and join the army, or find something better than the life he knew. Lyla became fed up with the constant worrying of whether tomorrow would be a day to starve or a day with a full belly, and found that being a scullery maid did not pay well enough. Under the shadow of night, Lyla fled to the main underworld tavern, and decided all she had left to sell was her body, and became a stripper and prostitute to the underworld drunkard and sleazebags.
That left only Shaylee, determined to find her own rainbow, continued her education and her desperate search for her siblings. Months went by, no traces or leads sprung up, and to this day she still has no idea whether her brother and sister are still alive. The years flew by, and Shaylee blossomed into a teenager, an A/B honor roll student who mainly kept to herself. By her junior year, Shaylee was ready to graduate early and begin her studies at the local university, majoring in biology and taking a class on Na'vi linguistics. At age 18, she began college, and instantly became fascinated with the Na'vi; their simplistic way of life, the flow of their language, and above all else, she held a deep fascination with the beauty of Pandora.
By age 19, she switched her major to Na'vi linguistics and her minor to Xenobiology. Through 3 years of intense studying and determination, Shaylee graduated, wondering what she could do next with her life. One of her Na'vi linguistics professors gave her information about a expedition to be made in a few months to explore and gather information about the lifeforms on Pandora. With in an instant, she was hooked, this is what she knew she wanted to do. The only problem, was the cash. To get an avatar required vast amounts of money, but she was prepared to go only as a scientist.
Shaylee was chosen for the journey due to her knowledge of linguistics, xenobiology, but also for her upbeat attitude and drive to succeed. During the preparation phases, Shaylee took one last biology class at the university, so before she left she would still have the knowledge fresh in her head. While studying in the library, her old Na'vi linguistics professor presented her with the opportunity to receive an Avatar of her own; a biology research grant. The idea instantly rekindled her interest, and she went to the University of Dublin's head of biology to plead her case for the grant, explaining she would use the money for the Avatar to aid in the study of Pandora's plant life, hoping to use their knowledge to aid in futhering advancements on Earth. Shaylee received her grant from the science department at UOD, and quickly went to the head of her expedition team to pay for her avatar.
RP Sample: A hushed silence hovered over tropical forest of Pandora, an almost eerie nothingness that left Shaylee feeling particularly cautious on this day. Each step felt as loud as gunfire against the stillness of the earth. The sky rested a bright blue, Shaylee's avatar slowly sunk to a crouch, keen, piercing eyes scanning the surrounding area. Her ears perked up at the sound of twigs snapping, holding her breath for fear of a Thanator, she cautiously reached down into her backpack for her hunting knife. Hushed footsteps echoed against the trees, gradually getting louder and louder until they abruptly stopped.
Glancing through the leaves of the underbrush, Shaylee couldn't help but gasp when she saw it. Grazing only a few yards away stood a Hexapede, seemingly unaware of her presence. "Oh my gosh..." she murmured, keeping her voice to a near audible whisper. Even with all the presentations and pictures she'd seen of Pandora, the fairly-new scientist still couldn't grasp how truly marvelous this place was.
The hexapede continued to graze as Shaylee pulled out her sketchbook and graphite pencils, settling herself against the trunk of a nearby tree for support. With delicate precision she began to sketch out the creature, taking note of body markings and physical structure. Her childlike nature couldn't help but smile at the familiarity of the stripes on its back; they looked as though they belonged to a tabby cat, or possibly even a bengal tiger. A soft smile spread over her face, somehow this strange and distant world was slowly becoming as familiar as the world she left behind. Her copper eyes glanced up at the hexapede, realizing slowly that she had completed her drawing and was ready to leave.
But something tugged at her, if she left she'd disturb its peaceful grazing. Maybe if I just take one step this way... In long, nimble strides, Shaylee did the best she could to remain hidden but at the same time remain silent and stealthy. The snap of a twig beneath her running shoes made her heart jump, and the hexepede scampered off, swallowed into the depths of the forest. A sigh escaped Shaylee's lips as she looked down at her sketch, writing beside it in sloppy, childlike handwriting, "Good job, you little ninja..." chuckling to herself, as made her way back toward the compound.
